If you’re a member of a historical society, library, museum, or another educational institution, we can arrange a genealogy workshop to meet your group’s needs.

Our workshops can be presented in a lecture style or as a hands-o experience. During the hands-on workshops, participants have the opportunity to learn and practice concepts being taught within the class session.

Genealogy Workshop Subjects:

Genealogy 101

This beginner genealogy course with professional genealogist Mica L. Anders will cover:

  • How to get started researching your family history.
  • What a pedigree chart is and how to fill it out.
  • How to organize your research and your family records.
  • How to access different record types such as the Census, birth, marriage, and death records.
  • Pitfalls to avoid and how to work around possible roadblocks.

At the end of the course, there will be in-class activities to practice some of the new genealogical skills you’ve learned.

African American Genealogy

Searching for African-American family history can be difficult if you don’t know where to look. 

In this beginner-level class, professional Genealogist Mica L. Anders will discuss basic genealogy techniques and introduce uniquely African-American sources so you have the tools to begin your search. The skills you learn during this course could help you uncover new family stories to share with future generations. 

Latin American Genealogy

Every country of origin has its tricks when it comes to genealogy research. Latin American family history can involve several different countries, languages, and ethnicities. 

In this class, led by professional genealogist Mica L. Anders, you will learn some basic genealogy techniques and hear more about records and resources commonly used when researching your Latin American family history.

DNA 101: The Positive and Negative Effects of Using DNA in Genealogical Research

Over the last several years, DNA kits like AncestryDNA and 23andMe have grown in popularity. More and more people are testing their DNA and learning about their family history and making new family connections. While these kits are great tools and can be helpful starting points, but there are some drawbacks worth exploring. 

During this course, we’ll discuss:

  • The basics of DNA kits
  • The pros and cons of taking a DNA test
  • How to communicate with your matches
  • What to do when you receive matches you weren’t expecting 

At the end of the course, there will be in-class activities to practice some of the new genealogical skills you’ve learned.

DNA 102: Genealogy and Genetics

During this course, we’ll dive deeper into DNA kits, and how they can work together with traditional genealogical skills to help you understand your unique family history. 

During this course, we’ll discuss:

  • The differences between DNA testing companies
  • How to organize and cluster your matches
  • How to use the results to further your own genealogical research

At the end of the course, there will be in-class activities to practice some of the new genealogical skills you’ve learned.

Secrets and Stories Revealed in Civil War Pension Files

The Civil War touched the lives of most Americans in the late 1800s. Civil War Military Pension files provide a unique portal into that time. These historic documents reveal much more than just which side a soldier fought for and their military service record. They tell stories of ordinary people and how they lived during this time. 

They reveal stories of lost loves, secret affairs, and for African-Americans, they could reveal who their slave owner may have been and what their life was like while enslaved. Join professional genealogist, Mica L. Anders, and hear about this unique set of documents. Learn how to find your own Civil War ancestors and how to obtain copies of their files.

He Came from Everywhere & Nowhere: Using a 4-Generation Case Study to Solve an Impossible Puzzle

Who doesn’t love a good mystery?

An ancestor with a different birth date and location on each uncovered document may sound frustrating, but it’s really just a puzzle waiting to be solved. 

Using research about a local family from St. Paul’s Rondo Community, you will learn how professional genealogist Mica L. Anders solved this mystery, and uncovered an interesting piece of Minnesota history in the process.

Anti-Racist Genealogy With A European-American Lens

When researching white European ancestors, it can be easy to overlook how white privilege has impacted the availability of information and documentation about them. During this course, Professional genealogist Mica L. Anders will discuss:

  • What’s missing from traditional genealogical practices. 
  • How genealogy can inform or reveal racial/cultural identity.
  • Ideas for using genealogy to transform historical harm. 

*This class assumes a basic understanding of racism and white privilege.

Summer Camp - Building Your Family Tree

Do you have a young person in your life who is interested in their family history? 

This week-long camp helps students ages 10-14 create and expand their family trees. During the week participants learn new skills like: 

  • How to properly do genealogical research
  • How to interview living relatives (and to double check the accuracy of their stories), 
  • How to cite and organize information and records
  • How to proceed when you think you’re stuck. 

The week ends with students making family tree posters and/or books and presenting them to their families!
